Wine with pumpkin with burrata

Roast pumpkin is sweet and earthy, burrata is milk and fat, pesto adds basil and garlic. Three soft things with no sharp edge, so the wine has to supply one: acidity to cut the fat and enough body to stand next to the pumpkin. For Champagne Day the Comité Champagne pairs it with a blanc de noirs. I have not put this plate next to that bottle; what follows is reasoning, not a tasting note.

Three styles that work

  1. 1

    Champagne Blanc de Noirs

The Comité's pick. Pinot Noir and Meunier bring body and red fruit that can stand up to roast pumpkin, and the acidity cuts through the burrata. Choose Brut or Extra Brut: a generous dosage puts sugar on a dish that is already sweet.

  2. 2

    Crémant with Pinot Noir

The same reasoning without the Champagne price: bottle fermentation, Pinot Noir in the blend, dry. Look for a brut without oak notes, because oak fights the pesto.

  3. 3

    Mâcon Chardonnay

If it does not have to be bubbles: a still white with some roundness. Roast pumpkin likes a little ripe fruit, and the burrata asks for acidity. A Mâcon without much new oak does both.

Without alcohol

Dry alcohol-free sparkling

Sweet plus fat asks for acidity and mousse. Pick a dry one; anything with residual sugar makes the pumpkin cloying.

Frequently asked questions

Which champagne goes with pumpkin?

A blanc de noirs, Brut or Extra Brut. A blanc de blancs can work too, but it has less body for roast pumpkin.

Does red wine go with pumpkin and burrata?

Light and cool, yes, for example an unoaked Pinot Noir. Anything with firm tannin clashes with the milk in the burrata.

No scores, but an opinion. The bottles I name I tasted myself; how each reached me is stated at the bottom of every review.
