Mar de Ons Albariño 2022: Salnés Valley, Rías Baixas
Mar de Ons Albariño 2022 from Bodegas Aguiuncho in Salnés Valley, Rías Baixas: salty, herbal, full-bodied. Stainless steel, 13% alcohol.
A blue bottle pulls attention on the shelf, but in the end what counts is what’s inside. The Mar de Ons Albariño 2022 from Bodegas Aguiuncho comes from the Salnés Valley in Rías Baixas, Galicia; the part of the DO with the highest vineyard density. Father and son Troncoso, Manuel Sr. and Manuel Jr., launched the bodega in 1999, with around 150,000 bottles produced per year today.

The wine
100% Albariño, fermented in stainless steel under D.O. Rías Baixas oversight. 13% alcohol; not heavy, not lightweight. Serve at 8-10°C.

Tasting notes
Light golden in the glass, with a green rim. The aromatics lead with herbs, bay, anise and menthol, sitting next to green apple, lemon zest, lime and grapefruit. That fruit returns on the palate, and the herbal layer wraps right around it. Acidity sits at medium-plus, the texture carries a wet-stone minerality, and there’s the saline lift the Atlantic site is known for. Body is full for an Albariño, the structure stays smooth, and the finish runs long with a sea-breeze pull.

At the table
Drinks alone; gets better with food. Best combination from my own table: Asian stir-fried noodles with spicy tofu and rice. Acidity against the heat, minerality against the soy. Also works with white-fish or chicken salads, grilled prawns, or a tortilla española.

Verdict
Mar de Ons delivers what good Albariño should: saline, herbal, fresh, with more body than entry-level Galicia. The blue bottle is a visual plus; the wine inside stands on its own. For a balanced choice in Rías Baixas without going to the well-known big names, a direct recommendation.
