Domaine François Schwach Crémant Blanc de Blancs Review: €18 Organic Sparkles Worth It?
€17.95 for an organic Crémant d’Alsace made by méthode traditionnelle. Domaine François Schwach in Hunawihr, run by women from the family since the 1600s (four centuries of continuity). Organically certified since 2020. The Champagne Fox sent a bottle for tasting; does it earn its price point?
The cuvée
90% Pinot Blanc and 10% Chardonnay, traditional method (second fermentation in bottle), 12 months on the lees. No added sulphites. Pinot Blanc is to Crémant d’Alsace what Glera is to Prosecco: reliable, neutral, fresh.
Tasting notes
Pale gold with fine sustained mousse. Very fresh and floral on the nose, dominated by green apple, with clean citrus notes. Pleasant and bright, but one-dimensional; no brioche, no autolysis creaminess from longer lees aging.
On the palate fresh and fruity with light phenolic bitterness on the finish. Apple, lime, lemon up front, a touch of jasmine and white tea. Unexpected yeasty, almost hoppy note — not unpleasant, just unusual in sparkling. Medium acidity, light body, short to medium-length finish.
What it lacks and what that means
Lacks complexity. Twelve months on the lees is too short for brioche or nutty notes. Profile stays straightforward rather than layered. But at €17.95 that’s not a problem; the bottle isn’t trying to be a contemplation wine, it’s made for casual aperitif and spontaneous gatherings. On that scale it delivers what it promises.
Comparison with Champagne
Tasted alongside a €49.95 La Pavillonne Champagne (see separate review), the quality gap is immediately audible: the Champagne shows butter, vanilla, brioche, longer finish and finer mousse. But the Crémant delivers ~70% of the pleasure for 36% of the cost. For what it is, strong value performance.
At the table
Serve at 8-10°C as aperitif. Works with blinis and smoked salmon, oysters, prawns, fresh goat cheese or mild Brie. Drink young; within a year of purchase.
Verdict
For drinkers wanting affordable bubbles without Champagne pretension, with organic certification and support for women-led vineyards, a direct choice. For serious wine drinkers seeking Champagne-level: not the right bottle. The skill is matching wine to occasion.
Available via The Champagne Fox for €17.95.
