Cosme Palacio Blanco: white Rioja from Viura
Cosme Palacio Blanco is a white Rioja made from Viura. Tasting notes, what the grape can and can't do, and when to open this bottle.
White Rioja rarely gets the attention it deserves. Most people know the region only for red, and Viura, the main white grape, carries a reputation as a neutral workhorse. The Cosme Palacio Blanco shows what happens when you take that grape seriously without overloading it.
Cosme Palacio makes this wine in Laguardia, the same house that bottles the Glorioso reds. Where the reds aim for familiarity, this white is a quieter story: no heavy oak, no fuss, just Viura allowed to be what it is.
In the glass: pale gold with a green tint. Ripe apple, pear, a touch of fennel and lemon peel, with that faintly bitter almond note that marks Viura. Fresh but not sharp acidity, dry, with a medium finish. A wine that combines coolness and simplicity without turning thin.
Where the grape hits its limits
Let’s be fair: Viura is not a grape of grand drama. This Blanco is tidy, fresh and well made, but it stays inside the lines. If you want the tension of a good Albariño or the depth of an oak-aged white Rioja, you won’t find it here. This is a thirst-quencher with manners, not a wine to contemplate.
Second point: drink it young. Without meaningful oak ageing, the wine lacks the structure to keep. A year or two after harvest it is at its best, after that the freshness that is its main virtue fades. Buy it for now, not for the cellar.
When to pour the Cosme Palacio Blanco
An aperitif on a warm evening, or with light dishes: white fish, a salad with goat’s cheese, grilled vegetables. Not with anything fatty or spicy, where it disappears. Serve it well chilled, around 8 degrees.
Available through merchants with a Spanish range. If you want to get to know white Rioja without jumping straight to the premium 1894 line, this is an honest starting point.
