Cosme Palacio 1894 Blanco: artisanal white Rioja
Cosme Palacio 1894 Blanco is the house's premium white Viura. Tasting notes, what sets the 1894 line apart, and why this bottle asks for food.

The label alone tells you this is something else. Handwritten text, no glossy print perfection, a reference to 1894, the year the house began. The 1894 line is the artisanal top end of Cosme Palacio, and the Blanco shows what Viura can do when you don’t treat it as a thirst-quencher.
Where the regular Cosme Palacio Blanco is fresh and direct, this one goes deep. Same grape, different ambition.
In the glass: full golden yellow. Ripe pear and yellow apple, then toasted nut, a touch of honey, chamomile and a saline minerality that lends length to the finish. The texture is creamier and broader than the entry Blanco, with acidity that keeps it all taut. This is white you let warm up in the glass, because served cold it hides half of what it offers.
Where the premium sits, and where the doubt is
The win is clear: this is serious white Rioja with texture and length, the kind of wine that proves Viura can do more than most people think. Next to the regular Blanco it feels like another world.
The first caveat is the style. The ageing gives the wine a rounder, nutty side that not everyone wants in a white. If you prefer the taut, fresh style of a young Albariño or an unworked Viura, you might find this 1894 too full, too grown-up.
Then the price context. As a premium bottle you compete with oak-aged white Riojas from established names and with serious white Burgundies in the same bracket. The 1894 Blanco is good, but the price asks you to compare before you choose.
When to pour the Cosme Palacio 1894 Blanco
Not as an aperitif, but at the table. With poultry, creamy risotto, aged cheeses, fish in a butter sauce. Don’t serve it too cold, around 10 to 12 degrees, or you miss the texture that sets it apart.
Available through merchants with a serious Spanish section. If the regular Blanco left you doubting white Rioja, this is the bottle that changes your mind.
