96 points and four generations behind the label. The Pian delle Querci Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 is the flagship from this family estate led by Vittorio Pinti. Strict selection, traditional Slavonian botti, one extra year of aging compared to the standard Brunello — all per DOCG Riserva protocol.
Riserva versus standard
A Riserva requires a minimum five years of aging (of which two in wood and six months in bottle), against four for a standard Brunello. Pian delle Querci selects only the best fruit and ages in new 50-hectolitre Slavonian botti with medium toast — no barrique, so no overpowering wood.
Vinification
100% Sangiovese Grosso (“Brunello”). Fermentation in small stainless tanks under temperature control, long maceration with alternating pumping over and délestage for deep extraction without losing elegance. Then long élevage in large oak, followed by minimum 12 months on bottle.
Tasting notes
Aromatic richness: red plum and wild strawberry up front, with mandarin juice, blood orange and lemon zest. Floral layer: rose petal, pink grapefruit, jasmine, elderflower.
On the palate medium-plus body, perfectly extracted tannins inside a harmonious structure. Long finish with clear progression — subtle, modern, incisive.
Verdict
One of the sharpest examples of what Pian delle Querci does with a serious Brunello vintage. Drinks beautifully now with an hour in carafe; cellaring through 2030-2035 promises tertiary complexity. For drinkers wanting Brunello Riserva at the highest level without Biondi-Santi pricing, a direct recommendation.
