Bottle of Cosme Palacio 1894 Tinto 2019 red Rioja with a handwritten label

Put the regular Cosme Palacio reds next to this 1894 Tinto and you taste the difference between a house wine and a statement. The handwritten label isn’t a marketing trick, it’s the artisanal top end of the house, the bottle they hang their reputation on. And the 2019 shows why.

This is Tempranillo with seriousness. No cheerful young juice like the Vino de Laguardia, no safe middle road like the Crianza, but a concentrated, structured wine that asks for attention.

Poured straight, it’s still locked. Give it air and it opens: ripe black cherry and plum, then liquorice, leather, tobacco and a savoury, almost balsamic depth. The 14% alcohol carries the wine without burning. Firm but fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity holding it upright, a long finish that lingers. A serious bottle.

Why patience isn’t optional but required

Here is the first caveat, and it matters. Served young and in a hurry, this wine sells itself short. The tannins are still tight, the fruit hides. Decant it for at least an hour, or lay the bottle down for another two to four years. Open it tonight without a decanter and you won’t taste what you paid for.

Then the competition. At this price you land among terroir-driven Rioja and single-vineyard bottles from the new wave, wines that put their money into origin and character. The 1894 Tinto is classic and well made, but it plays it safe. If you want tension and surprise, you can sometimes find it elsewhere for less.

When to pour the Cosme Palacio 1894 Tinto

At the table, with patience. With roast lamb, aged beef, a mushroom stew, old manchego. Serve around 17 degrees, after decanting. Not the bottle for a weeknight, but for a meal you take your time over.

Available through merchants with a serious Spanish section. If the Crianza left you wanting more depth, this is the bottle that delivers. Expect to wait a little before it gives.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Cosme Palacio 1894 Tinto need decanting?

Yes, an hour at least. The tannins are still tight and the fruit is hiding, so opening it without a decanter sells the wine short. The alternative is to put it away for another two to four years.

Which grapes are in the 1894 Tinto?

Tempranillo with Graciano, the 2019 vintage, from Rioja DOCa at 14 percent alcohol. The Graciano is what separates it from the Crianza in the same range: more structure and a tighter acid line.

What food suits this wine, and what does not?

The table: leg of lamb, aged beef, a mushroom stew or old manchego, served around 17 degrees after decanting. Not a midweek bottle. And to be straight about the competition: at this price you reach terroir-driven Rioja and single-vineyard bottles from the new wave. This one is classic and well made, but it plays safe; anyone after tension will find it elsewhere.
