Cantina Tramin Stoan 2023: stone in the glass

Cantina Tramin Stoan 2023, a white blend from Alto Adige. Fresh, mineral and precise, but with a finish that stays average. My tasting note.

“Stoan” is dialect for stone, and that is no accident. Cantina Tramin Stoan 2023 wants to voice the mineral, taut side of Alto Adige, and it does. I tasted it at La Grande Bellezza in Amsterdam, among seven other Italian stars. A white blend that does its job neatly, though the limit of that job sits in the finish.

The blend is many-voiced: Chardonnay 65%, Sauvignon Blanc 20%, Pinot Bianco 10% and Gewürztraminer 5%. Eleven months on large oak, then three months in bottle before release. The grapes come from 400 to 600 metres, because not every variety likes the highest plots. Gewürztraminer gives the backbone, Sauvignon Blanc the grassy notes, Chardonnay the fruit.

Tasting Note

Cantina Tramin Stoan 2023 on the tasting table

Appearance

Clear and youthful, pale straw gold in the glass.

Nose

Fresh and fruity. Apple and pear up front, with a spicy edge and a mineral, almost stony note that winks at the name.

Palate

Round yet lively. A light creaminess carries the fruit, cut through by a saline, stony minerality. Tingling acids keep everything awake.

Finish

Peppery and tart, with that tingle that asks for the next sip. But the length stays average, no more than that.

Quality

A neat, precise wine that honestly shows the house’s mineral style. Not a wine that floors you, but one you trust. The finish keeps it just below the real top.

What stayed with me is the honesty of this glass. Cantina Tramin keeps studying the role of Gewürztraminer in the blend, because that grape tends to dominate. In this 2023 that voice stays neatly in place, and that is impressive. The flip side: all that control means the wine misses just the bit of conviction in the finish that would lift it to the level of the Troy.

Drink or keep? Lovely now, and with that oak and those acids it will hold easily for the next few years. A wine for the table, not one to forget in the cellar.
