Burgundy and expensive: those two are firmly linked in most people’s minds. That is partly true. Yet between €15 and €35 lies a whole world that rarely makes the headlines: small independent estates, often a younger generation at the helm, working organically or biodynamically. When Christopher and Avital from Burgundy or Nowhere asked me if I wanted to taste a few of their selections, the answer was easy.

Sharing wine beyond the taste alone is what VinoVonk is about. It helps people make better choices.

About Burgundy or Nowhere

Christopher and Avital import affordable wines from small Burgundy producers each month through their venture, Maison Mazille, a guesthouse in Cluny/Mâcon that doubles as a platform for their discoveries.

Their selection sits between 15 and 35 euros. No memberships or newsletters; everything runs through Instagram. They look at the winemaker’s craft, vintage quality, and origin. A good winemaker, they argue, can pull something special from any terroir. Each year they revisit the selection and suggest alternatives if a vintage falls short. They also actively scout new talent, since reputation pushes the price up regardless of what’s in the bottle.

Tasting notes and the stories behind the bottle

Three wines on the table, three different stories. What stood out right away: the price-to-quality really lines up here.

2020 Mâcon-Chardonnay, Tourbillion, Domaine Vuillemez

Vuillemez Père & fils, a Swiss wine estate based in the charming village of Chardonnay, began producing organic wines in 2019. The estate, managed by Claude Vuillemez, values tradition. Swiss oenologist Christian Vessaz ensures the wines are vibrant and aromatic.

This 2020 Unoaked Chardonnay from Mâconnais is balanced yet complex, and easy to drink. It features a pleasing aroma of green and red apple, peach, and a hint of butterscotch, complemented by a creamy texture, smooth medium (+) acidity, and a great finish. The cuvée, “Tourbillon”, is made in egg-shaped vats, resulting in a 13% alcohol content for the 2020 vintage. This fresh wine is excellent for those seeking high-quality, refreshing wines.

2020 Givry Blanc, Champ Pourot, Domaine de la Luolle

This creamy white Givry from the acclaimed Champ Pourot vineyard is a Chardonnay matured in large French oak barrels. This results in a refined woody touch and a nice, balanced wine. It has rich aromas and mineral elements with white flowers, wet stone, toasted hazelnut, almonds, beeswax, honey, and vanilla, paired with a mineral touch and pleasant acidity. The finish has a hint of peppermint and white pepper. A really lovely, crisp acidity that combines with a smooth, gentle character. I love it.

Domaine Luolle is run by Olivier and Sandrine Dovergne in the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy. After a global sailing trip, they decided to follow their passion for wine production. The domain, which has been organically farmed for three generations, operates under the principle of “less is more”. This is something you really find in the wine. They oversee all processes, from grape selection to vinification and bottling, constantly learning new techniques.

2021 Bourgogne Rouge, La Coulée Rare, Domaine de la Luolle

This elegant and light red Burgundy is perfect to drink on its own and very enjoyable. It’s a fresh-style Pinot Noir laden with abundant fresh red fruit and subtle notes of cinnamon, thyme, and clay. Its medium-plus tannins and gentle medium-plus acidity make it a highly complex and nicely balanced wine.

The wine is vinified on concrete for two weeks, unsulfured, and fermented with wild yeasts, then aged on 15% new oak. Domaine Luolle, run by Olivier and Sandrine Dovergne, has produced charming, organically farmed wines for generations.

Closing

Burgundy or Nowhere is a good address if you’re looking for affordable wines from small Burgundy producers. The 2020 Mâcon-Chardonnay Tourbillion is organic, balanced, and accessible. The 2020 Givry Blanc Champ Pourot is biodynamic, creamy, and mineral. And the 2021 Bourgogne Rouge La Coulée Rare shows what a good Pinot Noir can do. Christopher and Avital, thanks for the eye-opener. Burgundy now feels a lot less out of reach.
