La Mauguit: Old Vine Brilliance from Muscadet’s New Visionary

In the heart of the Muscadet region, where the Sèvre Nantaise meets the Maine River, Pierre Goiset’s La Mauguit 2022 stands as a testament to what’s possible when ancient vines meet modern natural winemaking. This exceptional cuvée emerges from vines planted around 1950 on a complex tapestry of gneiss, orthogneiss, and quartz soils in the La Mauguitonnière parcel of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre.

The wine begins its journey with hand-harvested Melon Blanc (the local name for Melon de Bourgogne) from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards where horses still plow between rows, minimizing soil compaction and preserving microbial life. After gentle pressing, the juice ferments with indigenous yeasts—never cultured strains—preserving the authentic microbial signature of the vineyard.

What makes La Mauguit particularly compelling is its 11-month aging process in neutral fiber tanks, where the wine develops remarkable complexity while maintaining purity of expression. Goiset’s minimal intervention approach continues with no filtering and only the barest touch of sulfur (25 mg/L), creating a living wine that evolves beautifully in the glass.

Visually striking with a luminous golden straw color, La Mauguit offers remarkable clarity despite its unfiltered nature. The wine’s artistic label—bold red shapes against blue striped elements—mirrors the tension found within: bright, lemony freshness balanced against profound mineral structure imparted by the complex soil composition.

At a balanced 12.5% alcohol, La Mauguit delivers an authentic terroir expression that defies the sometimes simple reputation of Muscadet. Notes of fresh citrus, green apple, and delicate white flowers give way to a distinctive saline minerality and textural depth that speaks of its ancient roots and maritime influence.

This wine particularly shines alongside the region’s seafood—try it with oysters from nearby Brittany, where the wine’s saline character creates a perfect harmony, or pair it with delicate white fish in herb butter where its structural elements can complement the richness.

With only limited bottles produced each vintage, La Mauguit represents not just a wine but a philosophy—revealing what’s possible when a winemaker listens to the land rather than imposing upon it.
