A Special Moment at Wine Professional 2025
On a crisp January afternoon in Amsterdam, amidst the bustling energy of Wine Professional 2025, I had the extraordinary privilege of experiencing a remarkable vertical tasting of Künstler’s G.G. Hölle Riesling. This exceptional opportunity, masterfully organized by Anfors Imperial, brought together nine vintages spanning over two decades of winemaking excellence. Gunter Künstler guided us through the different years, vintages, and conditions, sharing remarkable stories about these wines.

A Legacy of Excellence in the Rheingau
When sample bottles from Weingut Künstler arrive, they bring with them nearly 400 years of winemaking history. Since 1965, the Künstler family has been crafting exceptional wines in the Rheingau. Today, under Gunter and Monika Künstler’s guidance, their commitment to excellence reaches new heights.
The Sacred Ground of Hölle
Despite its name meaning “hell” in German, the Hölle vineyard is anything but infernal. This Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) site represents some of the finest terroir in Hochheim. South-facing slopes and mineral-rich loess-loam soils create the perfect environment for exceptional Riesling production.
The Art of Hand-Harvesting
Every grape destined for Künstler’s G.G. Hölle Riesling undergoes careful hand selection. This meticulous approach, standard for their Grosse Gewächs wines, ensures only perfect fruit makes it into these prestigious bottles.
A Master’s Perspective
During the tasting at Wine Professional 2025, Gunter Künstler took a moment for candid reflection that resonated deeply with everyone present. He said, “Nowadays, people want to buy white wine, drink it, and forget about it. In the past, they understood that waiting brings more depth, more flavor, and ultimately, more pleasure.” His voice carried the weight of years of winemaking wisdom. We truly need to embrace this idea of waiting longer so we can enjoy the wine more.

A Vertical Journey Through Time

Rich yet precisely balanced, this vintage shows remarkable poise. Green and red apple notes interweave with grassiness. Peach and nectarine add depth, while gentle white pepper notes carry through to a saline finish.
2021: The Quiet Sophisticate
It’s an intriguing vintage that rewards patience. The restrained nose gradually reveals subtle complexities. Like a skilled minimalist painter, this wine shows how less can indeed be more.
2020: Accessibility Meets Depth
Wet stone minerality meets ripe apricot in perfect harmony. Both green and red apple notes emerge, complemented by apple blossom, hay, and white pepper. Remarkably approachable while maintaining serious depth.
2019: Power and Precision
Rich honey notes intertwine with red apple characteristics. White pepper and blossom elements provide elegant complexity, while an unexpected green chili note adds excitement. The precision in its dryness astounds.
2018: The Harmonizer
It’s a masterclass in balance. The expressive nose shows beautiful development. Honey, hay, and green chili notes dance with citrus and lime. A gentle white pepper note carries through the elegant finish.
2016: The Quiet Philosopher
Speaking softly but with profound depth, this vintage whispers its excellence. Citrus and lime lead, followed by honey, beeswax, and vanilla cookies—an exercise in understated brilliance.
2007: Time’s Reward
This wine profoundly reminds us of Riesling’s aging potential. The nose explodes with complexity: smoky notes, salt-preserved lemon, honey, beeswax, and white tea. A hint of butterscotch emerges. The acid structure shows remarkable complexity.
1997 Auslese: The Elder Statesman
This is a fitting finale to our vertical. Butterscotch softness meets gentle vanilla notes. Green apple freshness and perfect acidity persist after decades. Hay and honey notes add richness while maintaining an elegant balance.
