Beautiful wines from Burgundy are known to many people. What is also known is that the price tag is almost always high, higher than wines from other areas. But affordable wines are indeed made in Burgundy, especially by small independent winemakers, often the young generation who want to make the best wines with organic or biodynamic methods. I am always curious about this. When Burgundy or Nowhere asked me if I wanted to taste a number of their wines and give my honest opinion about it, I naturally said no. Collaborating to share knowledge about wine that goes beyond the bottle is also the aim of VinoVonk. This helps people make better choices and learn more about wine.<\/p>\n
Christopher and Avital introduce unique, affordable wines each month from small Burgundy producers through their venture, Maison Mazille. This bed and breakfast, located in Cluny\/M\u00e2con, serves as a platform to share their wine discoveries.<\/p>\n
They import their own wines, focusing on unique Burgundies priced between 15 and 35 euros. Instead of memberships and newsletters, they keep followers updated via Instagram. Their wine selections are based on the winemaker’s skill, the quality of the vintage, and its origin, believing that a talented winemaker can produce excellent wine from any terroir. They annually evaluate wines and suggest alternatives if a vintage doesn’t meet expectations. They also actively seek new wine-making talent, noting that a winemaker’s reputation can influence the price-quality ratio.<\/p>\n
I greatly enjoyed tasting wines from Burgundy, and I’m eager to share these experiences with you. I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional quality of these wines from the renowned Bourgogne region, especially considering their price.<\/p>\n

Vuillemez P\u00e8re & fils, a Swiss watchmaker based in the charming village of Chardonnay, began producing organic wines in 2019. The estate, managed by Claude Vuillemez, values tradition. Swiss oenologist Christian Vessaz ensures the wines are vibrant and aromatic.<\/p>\n
This 2020 Unoaked Chardonnay from M\u00e2connais is balanced yet complex, and easy to drink. It features a pleasing aroma of green and red apple, peach, and a hint of butterscotch, complemented by a creamy texture., smooth medium (+) acidity, and a great finish. The cuv\u00e9e, “Tourbillon”, is made in egg-shaped vats, resulting in a 13% alcohol content for the 2020 vintage. This fresh wine is excellent for those seeking high-quality, refreshing wines.<\/p>\n

This creamy white Givry from the acclaimed Champ Pourot vineyard is a Chardonnay matured in large French oak barrels. This results in a refined woody touch and a nice, balanced wine. It has rich aromas and mineral elements with white flowers, wet stone, toasted hazelnut, almonds, beewax, honey, and vanilla, paired with a mineral touch and pleasant acidity. The finish has a hint of candy cane and white pepper. It has a really lovely crispy acidity that combines with smooth acidity. I love it.<\/p>\n
Domaine Luolle is run by Olivier and Sandrine Dovergne in the C\u00f4te Chalonnaise in Burgundy. After a global sailing trip, they decided to follow their passion for wine production. The domain, which has been organically farmed for three generations, operates under the principle of “less is more”. This is something you really find in the wine. They oversee all processes, from grape selection to vinification and bottling, constantly learning new techniques.<\/p>\n

This elegant and light red Burgundy is perfect to drink on its own and very enjoyable. It’s a fresh-style Pinot Noir laden with abundant fresh red fruit and subtle notes of cinnamon, thyme, and clay. Its medium-plus tannins and gentle medium-plus acidity make it a highly complex and nicely balanced wine.<\/p>\n
The wine is vinified on concrete for two weeks, unsulfured, and fermented with wild yeasts, then aged on 15% new oak. Domaine Luolle, run by Olivier and Sandrine Dovergne, has produced charming, organically farmed wines for generations.<\/p>\n

Some of the gems you’ll find include the 2020 M\u00e2con-Chardonnay, Tourbillion, and Domaine Vuillemez, an organic wine that’s balanced and complex but still super easy to drink. Then there’s the 2020 Givry Blanc, Champ Pourot, Domaine de la Luolle, a biodynamic creamy white Givry with a gentle touch of woodiness, rich aromas, and a kick of mineral vitality.
