Hotspot in Retired Jailhouse: Cafe Jansen Bajeskwartier Amsterdam

Introduction to Cafe Jansen Bajeskwartier

As an enthusiast of wine and food, I am always searching for unique experiences and restaurants to try, and of course, share with you. Recently, I had the pleasure of being invited to Cafe Jansen, a new restaurant located in Amsterdam’s Bajeskwartier district. This is not your typical eatery in the heart of the city; it’s a culinary journey that takes you back in time to Amsterdam’s retired jailhouse at the edge of the city.

Cafe Jansen Bajeskwartier is a remarkable blend of history and gastronomy, where the old and new come together to create an unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant has established itself as a new hotspot in what will soon be a trendy area of Amsterdam, tucked away in one of the city’s historic districts. It is a part of a short-stay hotel that caters to new temporary residents of the city, such as expats and students, but not tourists.

The History of Amsterdam’s Retired Jailhouse

The story of Cafe Jansen Bajeskwartier begins with the history of Amsterdam’s retired jailhouse, known as the Bijlmerbajes. This imposing structure dates back to the 19th century and has undergone many transformations over the years. Once a place of confinement and punishment, it has been transformed into a great new restaurant.

The jailhouse was retired in the late 20th century and, after years of development, was transformed into Cafe Jansen Bajeskwartier. The restaurant was constructed using the old concrete from the original building, which is a testament to Amsterdam’s innovative spirit and its commitment to preserving its rich heritage. It shows the city’s ability to find beauty and potential in even the most unlikely places.

How was the dinner?

It was an amazing experience! We were welcomed with a bottle of tap water, which is always a good sign. As someone who loves to try as much as possible, I asked the waiter at Cafe Jansen for suggestions on how to fully experience their menu. He recommended we share some dishes.

We started with a great glass of blanc de blanc champagne by Jean Gimonnet that had nice citrus and flint aromas, pleasant yeast, and a spicy aftertaste. All the dishes had a rustic refinement with beautiful flavors and a thick edge of elegance. We began with baby carrots with ricotta, herbs, nuts, and black rice. The second dish was roasted cauliflower with hazelnuts, pine nuts, red and yellow peppers, herb oil, and herbs. The roasted cauliflower was very delicious and paired perfectly with the Bourgogne Chardonnay, which had great citrus and elegant acidity.

For the first main course, we had braised cabbage with parsnip, herbs, soy mushroom broth, walnuts, and radish. It paired well with the Bourgogne Macon-Villages that had a pleasant peach citrus flavor.

The second main dish was lamb neck with jus, potato cake, and fava beans. It paired really well with a nice cooled Spätburgunder (a German pinot noir) that had great earthy notes together with fresh strawberries and nice acidity. It was a perfect combination!

For dessert, we had a simple but really tasty scoop of ice cream. Sometimes, simple things can be wonderful!
